Accused Faulkner-Letters Thief Jailed

An ex-lawyer charged with the theft of six William Faulkner letters from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau turned himself in to police in Arkansas December 2.

Robert Hardin Smith, 43, of Jacksonville, Arkansas, was being held in jail in North Little Rock and held on $25,000 bond. Prosecutors in Cape Girardeau were expected to file extradition papers so Smith could be tried in Missouri, the Southeast Missourian reported December 3.

Smith is accused of stealing the letters during a visit to the Kent Library rare book room at SMSU September 30.
