Without a Director, Rhode Island Library
May Lose State Funding

After about 18 months without a library director, the Woonsocket (R.I.) Harris Public Library may lose its $175,257 in state funding if it does not fill the vacancy by next July. Rhode Island requires that a library have a director in order to receive aid.

The library’s board of trustees has begun laying the groundwork for hiring a new director, but Dorian Parker, vice chairman of the board of trustees, said that no timetable for hiring a replacement has yet been set, the August 17 Woonsocket Call reported.

Former Director Cynthia Edson left the position February 28, 2001, when the board stripped her of her office and many of her duties before her contract expired that day. Edson has since filed a lawsuit seeking $300,000 in damages against the board and the city. That suit is still pending in U.S. District Court.
