Officials Investigate
Missing Muncie Library Funds
State and local authorities are looking into the disappearance of more than $124,000 from the Muncie (Ind.) Public Library after a State Board of Accounts audit found that a little more than two-thirds of the fines and fees collected over an 18-month period had not been deposited in the bank.
The audit suggests that former library bookkeeper Robert C. Oxley failed to deposit $72,598 and wrote checks to himself worth $51,830 while altering the records so the library board would approve the expenditures, the Muncie Star Press reported August 22.
Library Director Virginia Nilles said library officials contacted city police “when we found out there was a problem.” She added that Oxley was not fired but “left as we were discovering it.” Although Oxley has not been charged with a crime, the accounting board has forwarded its report to the Delaware County prosecutor’s office.
Nilles said the missing funds affected the library’s operating reserve, not ongoing programs.
