Missing British Library Atlas Located

Portions of a 17th-century pocket atlas reported missing from the British Library’s map reading room in July have been recovered from the home of a 37-year-old man in Folkestone, England. London police arrested the unnamed man August 5 after finding pages from the 1626 atlas of county maps by British printer John Bill for sale on the Internet for as much as £200 ($307 U.S.) each, according to the August 9 Hampstead and Highgate Express.

Detective Nick Wilcox said that individual maps from the atlas had been sent to a shop in Folkestone for framing. “We found 17 framed pages waiting for collection and after inspecting invoices we found a total of 46 pages had been framed since the atlas was taken,” he told the Express. “We have now recovered nearly all the pages and we are confident we will find the rest.”

After the criminal investigation is over, conservation experts will piece the atlas back together for eventual return to the British Library.
