Library’s Vigilance Leads to
Child-Pornography Arrest
The suspicions of a Salt Lake City library worker led to the arrest of a 41-year-old man for possession of child pornography.
The patron, who was not identified in a July 30 Salt Lake City Deseret News report, first came to the attention of the library staff member July 11 when he used up two reams of paper at a Main Library terminal. The employee found what was believed to be child pornography, confiscated the printouts, and ejected the man. Six days later, he returned and allegedly accessed more child pornography; a security guard detained him while police were notified.
A subsequent search of the suspect’s home turned up laminated images showing minors and more than 100 pairs of children’s underwear. According to police reports, the man was previously banned from the library for viewing pornography, but changed his appearance to evade the notice of staff.
Noting that library policy prohibits the viewing of pornography, Assistant Director Chip Ward told the Deseret News, “The best guard here is a clear policy that the librarians are trained on and that the patrons are aware of.”
