Librarian Arrested for Selling
Donated Books Online

York County (S.C) Library employee Phyllis Gail Davis, 48, was arrested July 26 for allegedly selling books online that were donated for book sales and keeping the proceeds. Davis, manager of the library’s public relations and development department, has worked at the library since 1966. She was charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine. Library Director David Lyon told the July 29 Rock Hill Herald that Davis has been placed on administrative leave with pay until the matter is concluded.

Police officers marked four books and donated them to the library. An undercover officer subsequently purchased them from Davis through the Half.com Web site.

Davis is accused of selling the donated books since July 2000. Police contacted the site to confirm her identity and were told by the site administrators that she had made $5,000 in sales in the past two years.

Lyon told the Herald that Davis confessed to selling the books online but said she had bought the books at library book sales then resold them.
