The Detroit Public Library is resuming its bookmobile service after nine years, thanks to two library millages passed by residents two years ago. Budget concerns had forced the library to discontinue bookmobile service in 1993, according to the August 22 Detroit Free Press.
Funds from one of the levies paid for two 28-foot bookmobiles that are expected to begin service September 23. A third, which is planned to be in service fall 2003, will be partially funded by a $180,000 donation from SBC Ameritech.
Each bookmobile carries a 2,800-item collection, including video and music selections, and is accessible to persons with disabilities. “Every service you expect in a regular library you can expect here,” Associate Director for Public Services Juliet Machie told the Free Press. “We’re combining books and technology. It’s very important for us to be in the neighborhoods.”
