Florida School District
Pulls Two Serial-Killer Books

At the request of a high-school parent who is running for the Hillsborough County (Fla.) Commission, the Hillsborough County School District has removed two similarly titled books from the libraries of the district’s four high schools: The A to Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers and The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers. Reconsideration committees are being formed at each school to review the challenged materials.

“I’m not saying this shouldn’t be in the [public] library or at Barnes and Noble,” Pawlisz said in the April 9 St. Petersburg Times, adding that they were inappropriate for school libraries because “those two boys from Columbine were reading books similar to this.” The encyclopedias include grisly details of how murders were committed, serial-killer fan-club addresses, and information about serial-killer game cards.

Pawlisz’s challenge came shortly after his political opponent, Ronda Storms, had made headlines by calling for cancellation of the contract allowing The Happy Show on local public-access TV after the show began airing explicit segments featuring naked women.
