Ex-Librarian Guilty of MurderA former supervisor at the Broward County (Fla.) Library was found guilty of first-degree murder April 10 in the bludgeoning and stabbing death of an ex-girlfriend in his Fort Lauderdale apartment in July 1997. The jury will meet again in June to determine whether William Coday, 45, will get the death penalty or life in prison, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported April 11. Coday’s attorneys do not deny that he killed Gloria Gomez, but during the penalty phase of the trial they plan to present evidence of his psychiatric problems. “We feel that when [the jurors] get the whole picture about his mental health history,” Assistant Public Defender George Reres told reporters, “they will realize that imposing the death penalty on him is gong to serve no one’s best interest.” However, jurors were not told about Coday’s prior homicide conviction in Germany for the 1978 killing of American exchange student Lisa Hullinger under similar circumstances. He pleaded insanity and served less than two years on the German equivalent of a manslaughter charge. Coday was supposed to get psychiatric treatment after his release and return to the United States, but discontinued treatment after only eight sessions. Posted April 15, 2002. |
