Weeklies Removed from Library LobbyFree weekly newspapers The Buzz, Synthesis, and the Chico News and Review have been asked to remove their distribution racks from the lobby of California State University/Chico’s Meriam Library to reduce congestion. The library initially announced that only the Orion, the university’s student weekly, would be allowed a display in the lobby. Bill Fishkin, publisher and founder of Synthesis, sent an e-mail to library director Carolyn Dusenbury objecting to that decision, arguing that not allowing publications of equal status amounted to discrimination, the Chico Enterprise-Record reported August 30. Dusenbury responded that she would consult with university counsel, and in the interim all newspapers, including the Orion, would be removed from the lobby. Darren Jensen, circulation manager for The Buzz, said he was told last year when the racks were installed that they were temporary, until renovation of the student union was completed. “They didn’t want us at all in the first place,” he said. News and Review publisher Kathy Barrett said she was disturbed that any newspaper would not be welcomed in a library. “The point is it is a library. You ought to be able to pick up the news in the library,” she said. Posted September 3, 2001. |
