Two Houston Libraries Established
in Honor of Flood Victim

Two special libraries will be set up using memorial funds for a Houston woman who drowned June 9 as a result of flooding caused by Tropical Storm Allison. Kristie Tautenhahn, a proofreader for a Houston law firm, drowned when floodwaters rushed into an underground parking garage elevator in the Bank of America building downtown.

Parents Carl and Bertie Tautenhahn requested that donations be sent to Houston’s Hosanna Lutheran Church and to the Bokenkamp Children’s Center, a treatment facility for troubled youth in Corpus Christi, Texas, according to the August 27 Houston Chronicle. Bertie said the libraries were fitting tributes to her daughter because she was an avid reader and fond of the center’s youth.

Hosanna Pastor David Tart said that $5,000 would be used for the church library, which will be housed in a new fellowship hall.

“Right now we have boxes of paperback books for the kids,” Bokenkamp Executive Director Bill Brattvet said in the August 27 Dallas News. “There’s no real system set up and that is what this library will [do] for us.” So far, he has received $350 in donations, about half of the amount needed for shelving.
