Mold Blankets Pennsylvania
High School Library

The Hempfield Area Senior High School library in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, was closed on the first day of classes after mold was found on all 20,000 of its books and its 90 computers.

Hempfield Superintendent Wayne Doyle told Pittsburgh’s WTAE-TV September 6 that he believed the mold grew during summer break when “the temperature was set way too low on the air conditioner unit, so the AC was running constantly.” The low temperatures and carpet cleaning on humid days was thought to have created the mold, which grew on the facility’s ceiling tiles and carpets as well as on the computers and books.

Doyle said that cleanup was to begin the weekend of September 8, and that after testing he hopes to reopen the library in about a week and a half.
