University of New Mexico
Library Dean Placed on Leave

University of New Mexico Library Dean Robert Migneault was placed on indefinite administrative leave November 5. University Provost Brian Foster told the November 6 Albuquerque Tribune the action was prompted by Migneault’s threat in October to go public about allegations about the university’s handling of a remark by UNM history professor Richard Berthold.

Berthold said at a public meeting in February that Migneault “should be shot” for the way he was running the library system. Migneault demanded that Berthold—who is under investigation for saying “Anyone who can blow up the Pentagon has my vote” in the wake of the September 11 attacks—be fired under a university policy regarding violent behavior.

Following a review of Migneault’s performance and library operations, the university announced last summer that he would resign effective June 30, 2002; Foster said in a statement released October 17 that Migneault sought an extension that would allow him to remain as dean beyond that date. Migneault also demanded that UNM reach a settlement in an age-discrimination suit filed by his wife against the university.

Foster said Migneault’s suspension would probably last “for the next four to six weeks.”
