Serve Liquor and They Will Come,
Says Glasgow City Council

While some libraries try to compete with bookstores by adding coffee bars, the Glasgow, Scotland, city council has suggested going one step further. They propose installing a café with bar inside the Mitchell Library, one of the largest reference libraries in Europe.

The council says the idea is an attempt to update the 125-year-old library and attract new visitors. “We want to make libraries places that people want to go in the 21st century, rather than just book-lending facilities,” a spokesman said in the November 19 Edinburgh Scotsman.

Other plans to modernize the library include installing Internet terminals and adding video and DVD rental areas. The proposal went before the council November 23.
