New Foundation Honors Bruce J. Ennis

A foundation and fellowship have been established in honor of former American Library Association General Counsel Bruce J. Ennis who died July 29, 2000, of leukemia. An expert in First Amendment, media, and communications law, Ennis also served as attorney for ALA’s Freedom to Read Foundation and the American Booksellers Foundation, and national legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union from 1976 until 1981.

The Bruce J. Ennis Foundation was created by friends and colleagues “to build upon and capture the impassioned spirit that Bruce demonstrated throughout his career.” A two-year Ennis Foundation Fellowship for First Amendment Law, administered by the National Association for Public Interest Law, will be awarded to a lawyer who seeks to work for a public-interest organization that promotes First Amendment protections and values.

The foundation will host a kick-off November 29 in Washington, D.C. For more information on the foundation or fellowship, write to ennisfoundation@jenner.com.
