CSU Killer’s Sanity Hearing Begins

Attorneys for Edward Allaway argued November 13 that the former California State University/Fullerton janitor who killed seven people at the university’s library on July 12, 1976, is “safe and sane” and should be released from a state mental hospital. Claiming that Allaway’s mental illness went into “spontaneous remission” after the killings, the defense said at a sanity hearing that he is not a threat to society, the Los Angeles Times reported November 14.

Although Allaway, 63, has failed at previous attempts to win his release, this time some of his doctors at Patton State Hospital say he is cured, including one psychiatrist who testified on the hearing’s opening day. However, family members of his victims oppose his release. “It’s common sense to me. You don’t let a mass murderer out on the streets,” said Paul Paulsen, whose sister was killed.

About a dozen psychiatrists and psychologists are expected to testify during the sanity hearing, which could last three weeks.
