Mold Removal Keeps California Library
Closed until June

Mold damage at the Richmond (Calif.) Public Library has turned out to be more extensive than expected, causing a two-week closure to stretch to nearly four months. The library closed in late February after a city inspection turned up airborne fungal spores, the Contra Costa Times reported May 4. Officials now hope the facility will reopen by the second week in June.

The mold was found primarily in crawl spaces, behind walls, and in underground tunnels. Water leakage from the roof, windows, and air conditioning was blamed as the likely cause. The Richmond city council approved $145,000 for mold abatement and to repair the leaks.

“It’s been a serious disruption,” City Librarian Joe Green told the Times. “About 80% of the library’s business is conducted from the main library.”

The city council will be making a decision within the next few weeks to place a tax measure on the November ballot to raise $712,000 over five years to pay for additional improvements to the library.
