Minnesota Teachers Rescue School LibraryPipestone-Jasper, Minnesota, teachers overwhelmingly voted April 17 to use half of their $120,000 staff development fund to save the 1,400-student school district’s librarian and four support positions scheduled to be cut from the budget. A district committee had recommended that nearly $700,000 be cut from the 2001–2002 budget including $85,000 to pay the salaries of learning center staff. Education Minnesota Association Co-president Jerry Hutchinson told the May 5 Worthington Daily Globe, “I don’t know how you can have a school without a library. That’s the heart of a school.” The school board not only accepted the teachers’ offer but added another $25,000 to fund the positions until the 2002–2003 school year. Board member Ken Ziebarth told the Daily Globe that Pipestone-Jasper operated three libraries until this year’s belt-tightening forced the board to close one and leave the other two operating on reduced hours. “Like any other school district, they needed to make some cuts,” said librarian Beverly Kvamme, who oversees the four paraprofessionals. “Even Worthington schools just cut their budget. I’m thankful that the teachers felt the learning center was important enough to save from being cut.” Posted May 14, 2001. |
