Library Cat Out after Third StrikeThe Escondido (Calif.) Public Library’s cat, whose scuffle with a patron’s assistance dog in November prompted a $1.5-million claim against the city, will take an “indefinite vacation” at an employee’s home, announced City Librarian Laura Mitchell, after L.C.—short for Library Cat—allegedly attacked another dog May 17. In the latest altercation, a woman walking her dog was peeking in the library’s window to get a glimpse of the infamous cat when L.C. ran out the front door and scratched the dog’s ears. This was the third time the cat, who has lived at the library since 1994, went after a dog; in December 1998, L.C. slightly injured a schnauzer outside the library, according to the May 23 San Diego Union-Tribune. Even before the attacks, L.C. had been minor celebrity with her own page on the library’s Web site. However, the widespread media coverage of the $1.5-million claim drew enough curiosity seekers—including many who brought their own dogs—to disrupt library operations, Mitchell said. Richard Espinosa, who filed the claim against the city, said he never wanted to see the cat removed from the library. “You can’t blame the cat,” he said. “You have to blame the human handlers.” Posted May 28, 2001. |
