EEOC Rules in Minneapolis PL Complaint

The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission concluded May 24 that a sexually hostile work environment existed at the Minneapolis Public Library prior to the establishment of its current policy on public Internet use. Twelve employees filed a complaint with the agency in May 2000, claiming that porn-surfing patrons made the working atmosphere hostile and offensive.

The EEOC invited both the staffers and the library administration to try to reconcile the dispute, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported May 25. An earlier attempt at mediation had failed after the complaint was filed last year.

Bob Halagan, an attorney representing the employees, told the newspaper that if further talks fail, his clients have the option of filing a lawsuit or seeking a prosecution by the Department of Justice.

The library revised its Internet policy a year ago, setting a strict 30-minute limit at each workstation and requiring users to show proper identification.
