State Library of Iowa May
Not Move, After All

A controversial plan to move the State Library of Iowa from its home for the past 100 years to make room for legislative staff who will be displaced during renovation of the state capitol has been put on hold for at least two more years, according to State Rep. Charles Gipp (R-Decorah).

Moving the library might cost more than originally thought, Gipp said, since the state would have to build a $5-million underground tunnel to connect the relocated legislative offices to the capitol. “Then you add in the cost of relocating the library, and pretty soon that figure is way out of line,” Gipp said in the March 13 Des Moines Register.

Lawmakers will compare the cost of moving the library to that of constructing a new building for Capitol staff and hope to make a decision before the end of the legislative session. They are also considering moving legislative staff to other buildings near the Capitol, Gipp said, but space is limited.
