Missaukee Library Director Fired by BoardAt a special meeting March 15, the board of the Missaukee (Mich.) District Library voted 5–1 to fire Director Kathy Glass. The board would not reveal the reason for the decision, citing a policy that forbids discussion of personnel issues. However, some of the board’s criticisms had inadvertently been made public when the director’s six-month review was sent to the Lake City council. That review cited board relations and financial concerns as Glass’s weakest areas and suggested she needed to work more closely with the board and carry out its policies even when she didn’t agree with them, the Cadillac News reported March 16. Glass said many of the allegations made against her were inaccurate, and that her requests for corrections had been ignored. More than 40 members of the public attended the meeting in support of Glass, but those who tried to speak before the vote were refused a hearing. Earlier that week, residents submitted to the board of commissioners a petition with more than 120 signatures requesting the resignation of two library board members who were criticized for their behavior during meetings and for questioning the director’s integrity. However, the commissioners took no action. Glass told the News she could cite only positives from her experience as director, but added, “I truly believe if I had managed my staff the way I’ve been managed, turnover would never end.” Posted March 26, 2001. |
