Commission Director Resigns
The West Virginia Library Commission is searching for a new executive director following the June 8 resignation of David Price at a commission meeting in Wheeling.
Price will join the private sector at the end of July after a stay of less than four years. He succeeded Fred Glazer, who during a 24-year term parlayed state, federal, and local money to build libraries in small towns across the state. According to the June 9 Charleston Gazette, librarians and local library trustees have been critical of Price’s failure to marshal local library supporters to lobby their legislators.
Judy Rule, Cabell County Public Library director and head of the search committee that chose Price, told the Gazette that Price made a lot of changes, including hiring new staff. “His weakness was he didn’t realize how much West Virginians like the status quo,” she said.
Price came to West Virginia from the San Francisco Public Library, where he was the special assistant who orchestrated the 1996 opening of SFPL’s new $137-million main building. In a prepared statement, Price said he would remain in the area and actively participate in the West Virginia Library Association.
