NYC Budget Agreement Restores
$50 Million in Library Funds

The $39.7-billion budget agreement reached June 6 by New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and the city council restores some $50 million in spending for libraries that the mayor had attempted to cut. The council adopted the budget by a 48–0 vote the following day.

The agreement on Giuliani’s last budget before leaving office follows the pattern of previous years, which saw the mayor cut funding for city libraries that the council then restored. “A budget is a compromise,” Giuliani said, standing in the City Hall rotunda alongside city council Speaker Peter Vallone and other council members. “You win some and you lose some.”
