Workers Injured in Detroit PL
Electrical Accident
A city electrical worker and two library staffers sustained injuries in two separate accidents July 19 at the main branch of the Detroit Public Library. The first incident occurred around 9 a.m. when two employees were shocked as they completed a routine checkup on the third-floor air-conditioning system. One was treated for second-degree burns, while the other was treated for a minor shock, according to the July 20 Detroit News.
The second incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when a worker from the city’s public-lighting department encountered an electrical short in a fuse after he was called in to investigate the earlier accident. The short created a loud explosion, prompting officials to evacuate and close the building the rest of the day. The city worker was treated for second-degree burns on both of his arms.
The library reopened as usual the following day. City spokesperson Greg Bowens told the News the accidents were under investigation, although he suspected human error.
The incidents were reminiscent of an electrical fire that closed the same facility for two days in September 2000.
