First Lady to Host
First National Book Festival
Seeking to “recognize the key role that reading and libraries play in the lives of both young people and adults,” the Library of Congress will sponsor the first National Book Festival, to be held September 8 on the grounds of the Capitol and at LC’s Thomas Jefferson Building. First Lady Laura Bush will host the event, which is modeled after the Texas Book Festival she founded while her husband was governor.
Plans include pavilions on the East Lawn of the Capitol, with readings, music, performances, and book-signings; panel presentations; and demonstrations of technological developments. The day before the festival, Bush and Librarian of Congress James H. Billington will read to local schoolchildren during a back-to-school event in the Great Hall of the library’s Jefferson Building. That afternoon, the First Lady will host a White House tea for the festival’s authors, illustrators, and celebrities.
LC will announce program details July 30, including the names of authors who plan to participate.
