Anti-Porn Group Heaps Criticism
on Library Groundbreaking Mix-up

A group of anti-pornography activists is fuming because of a missed opportunity to picket the groundbreaking for a new $6.8-million branch library in Monroe, Washington. When picketers showed up at 1 p.m.—the time indicated on a press release sent to local media—they discovered to their chagrin that they were three hours late: The ceremony had taken place at 10 a.m., as separately prepared invitations had informed local dignitaries.

Taking responsibility for the error, Sno-Isle Regional Library System spokesperson Mary Kelly said in the June 30 Everett Herald, the mix-up was “not intentional,” but rather a “stupid mistake and purely a typo.” But Mary Blanchard of Monroe told the paper that officials had calculatedly misled protesters to keep them away from the event.

Although it may have been little comfort to the late arrivals, the event did attract some protesters that had gotten wind of the correct time. The group, some of whom carried anti-pornography placards outside a board meeting on May 29, gets its next formal chance to air its views at the board’s July 23 meeting.
