New Chair Takes Over
Embattled Atlanta Library Board

The Atlanta–Fulton County Public Library Board has picked a retired Delta Airlines pilot to replace former chair William McClure, who resigned in December at the request of newly elected County Commissioner Bill Edwards.

Clint Johnson, 63, who was confirmed January 24, will face a major challenge in improving the board’s image in the midst of a racial discrimination lawsuit by white employees who allege that they were targeted in a mandated reorganization.

“The big thing I’d like to do most is to have a free hand setting up the library system properly,” Johnson said in the January 25 Atlanta Journal-Constitution, referring to indications from the 2000 census that library services in the county do not match current population trends.

Johnson has been a board member for the past two years.
