Canadian Library of Parliament
Makes the Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint issued on January 17 a 14-karat-gold coin commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Library of Parliament. Though the $100 coin is legal Canadian tender, it is intended as a collector’s item only and is 26th in a series of coins honoring significant Canadian events, people, and places.

The “heads” side features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the “tails” side boasts an inside view of the library building, including a statue of Queen Victoria, the English monarch who established the permanent Library of Parliament in 1876.

“The Library of Parliament is one of the most famous symbols of the Canadian Confederation,” remarked Alfonso Gagliano, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, who oversees the Canadian mint.
