New York State Grant Aids
Library Rebuilding Efforts

A $100,000 state grant has boosted the rebuilding efforts of the small Macedon Public Library in western New York that was struck by a fire April 29. The blaze destroyed the library’s 30,000-item main collection and heavily damaged the library’s 6,000-volume rare-book collection.

A new 10,000-to-14,000-square-foot library would cost about $125 per square foot, town board member Paul Kenyon told the December 2 Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Officials are proposing raising the town tax rate by as much as 66% to help pay for rebuilding the library.

“When Macedon Public Library was destroyed by a fire in April, we didn’t just lose a library, we lost a valued community treasure,” state Senator Michael Nozzolio, (R-Fayette) said in a December 1 announcement. State Assemblyman Robert Oaks (R-Macedon) added, “There is no more important service a community can have than a quality library.”

Town officials are expected to rebuild the library on the same site, which is near the Macedon Elementary School and a day care center. The library is currently operating in a temporary location.
