CSU Library Killer Denied Release

A judge ruled December 21 that Edward Allaway, the former California State University/Fullerton janitor who killed seven people at the university’s library on July 12, 1976, remains a danger to society and should not be released from a state mental hospital.

Although several psychiatrists testified at the sanity hearing that Allaway would not pose a risk if released, Orange County, California, Superior Court Judge Frank F. Fasel noted that doctors could not predict whether Allaway, who has a history of schizophrenia, might kill again. He also criticized Allaway for basing his case on experts hired by the public defender’s office and refusing to meet with state mental health officials, the Los Angeles Times reported December 22.

Relatives of Allaway’s victims and witnesses to the shooting rampage greeted the ruling with relief, the newspaper reported. “I just think what he did is beyond what anyone is capable of being cured of,” said former library employee Cynthia Carpenter, who witnessed the event.

Allaway is eligible to reapply for release once a year.
