Swift Returns to Armagh Public Library

A 275-year-old copy of Gulliver’s Travels with handwritten alterations by author Jonathan Swift has been returned to the Armagh Public Library in Northern Ireland 20 months after it was stolen in an armed robbery.

Dean of Armagh and Keeper of the Library Herbert Cassidy praised the police in both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic for their role in its return. “We are delighted to have the book back,” he said on BBC Radio Ulster August 2, “and we have looked at it very carefully to make sure it is all there.”

Police had invited Cassidy to Dublin the day before to inspect a book they had seized. He said his eyes teared up with joy when he saw it was the library’s missing treasure, the Associated Press reported. The book will be back on display after the library completes renovations in September.

Philip Joseph Monks of Armagh and Arthur McShane of Dublin have been in custody since they were arrested at Dublin Airport in January 2000 in connection with the robbery.

Popsted August 6, 2001.
