Bills Would Restore $98 Million
in Community College Cuts

Bipartisan support in the California state legislature is growing in the campaign to restore some of the $126 million cut from community college budgets by Gov. Gray Davis July 26.

Sen. Jack Scott (D-Pasadena) and Assemblyman Robert Pacheco (R-Walnut) both proposed legislation that would restore $98 million in funds earmarked for libraries and building improvements, the San Francisco Chronicle reported August 22. Lawmakers want to restore the funds using money from the state budget reserves.

Assemblyman Bob Margett (R-Arcadia) said, “If he is the education governor, and I’m sure he is, he will be more than willing to restore those needed funds to the community colleges.” Davis has given no indication yet whether he would reconsider the cuts.

State Senate President Pro Tem John Burton said the governor could face a veto override attempt if he doesn’t restore some of the funds, according to an August 22 Associated Press report.
