Jordan’s National Library
to Enforce Copyright Law

National Library Director General Mamoun Talhouni announced in the August 15 Jordan Times that he is considering using a staff team to enforce the country’s 1992 copyright law. The team would conduct random visits to music stores and computer shops to ensure that no illegal copying is taking place.

“If the library’s personnel find pirated items without valid licenses during their inspection visits, the items will be confiscated and the employer or owner will be referred to the general prosecutor,” Talhouni said.

The Times reported that in the two years since Jordan embarked on a tough campaign to prosecute violations, illegal copying and computer piracy have dwindled. The National Library is an independent branch of the Ministry of Culture.
