Woman to Stand Trial for
Denver Book-Drop Pipe Bombs

A woman was ordered March 23 to stand trial for allegedly leaving pipe bombs in book drops at two branches of the Denver Public Library last year.

Bomb-squad members testified that they retrieved and defused devices at the Ross–University Hills branch August 7 and the Ross–Cherry Creek branch September 28, the Denver Post reported March 24. Frank Harrington added that threats had been spray-painted on walls and sidewalks near the libraries, including one that read, “Stop your harassment or you will be murdered.”

Police began searching for Valerie Giorella, 42, after a Denver minister and a parishioner reported seeing her washing down pipe bombs at their church. They found her last October 2 living in her 1989 Toyota van parked near one of the library branches. Two pipe bombs and gunpowder were discovered inside the van.

No motive has been established for the crimes.
