University of Hawaii Faculty End StrikeUniversity of Hawaii faculty members have ended a 13-day strike that shut down the state’s 10 campuses and kept 42,000 students out of class. The new contract was announced by Gov. Ben Cayetano following a 12-hour negotiating session April 17. The University of Hawaii Professional Assembly reported on its Web site that the settlement includes across-the-board raises for all faculty, including librarians, of $2,325 in the first year and 6% in the second year, with a 1% merit raise each year. Lecturers will receive 3% increases each year. The library at the University of Hawaii/Manoa, the system’s flagship campus, remained open during the strike, which was honored by nearly all of the school’s 52 librarians. A separate strike by the state’s 13,000 public-school teachers and librarians continues. Gov. Cayetano hoped the university settlement would provide momentum to end the teachers strike, the Associated Press reported April 18. Posted April 23, 2001. |
