Missaukee Board Members Won’t ResignFour Missaukee (Mich.) District Library board members who were asked to resign do not intend to do so, county board commissioners revealed at their April 17 meeting. On April 10, residents had presented the commissioners with petitions containing 857 signatures requesting the removal of the five library board members—four appointed by the county and one by the city—who voted to fire director Kathy Glass March 15. The commissioners then sent certified letters asking the four county board members to state their intentions, the Cadillac News reported April 19. Portions of their responses were read aloud at the meeting. “We’ve done everything that the petitions have asked us to do except fire the library board,” said chairman Gary Birgy. “We can’t do that.” The commissioners sought advice from an attorney, the governor’s office, the attorney general’s office, and the state library board, but are still waiting for responses. Several options were proposed, including a suggestion from two commissioners that the library board and Glass meet with the board of commissioners to discuss the situation. However, Birgy said, “most of them never show up when we ask them.” Posted April 23, 2001. |
