Los Angeles Renames Library for Mayor

The Los Angeles Public Library Commission voted April 19 to rename the Central Library for Mayor Richard Riordan on the heels of his proposal to hike library funding by 14%. Riordan announced April 16 that the final budget of his eight-year term calls for the city’s 68 branches to receive $68.5 million, or nearly double the amount appropriated to libraries when he first entered office, according to the April 17 Los Angeles Times.

“Mayor Riordan has presided over an era of unprecedented expansion of the library’s facilities, services, and programs,” supporters wrote to the library commission in March. “Under the mayor’s leadership 30 new or expanded libraries have opened—including the renovated and expanded Central Library.” Among those advocating for Riordan’s name on the library were Cardinal Roger M. Mahoney, author Ray Bradbury, and billionaire businessman Eli Broad, a friend of the mayor.

Rejecting proposals for public input, the library commission voted 3–1, with one abstention, to rename the downtown main facility the “Richard J. Riordan Central Library.” Riordan’s budget proposal, which would complete the task of expanding hours at all city libraries, was unveiled to the City Council April 20.
