Hawaii Public-School Teachers Settle StrikeHawaii public-school teachers approved a new contract April 24, ending a 19-day statewide strike that affected some 180,000 schoolchildren. The Hawaii State Teachers Association, which represents teachers, counselors, and librarians, overwhelmingly ratified the proposal by a 9,208–1,551 vote. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported April 24 that the deal calls for a 16% pay raise over four years and a $1,100 bonus. Teachers will also move up in the salary scale based on level of education and years of service. The salary package will cost the state a little more than $111.7 million. Posted April 30, 2001. |
