SLA Names Shaffer Executive Director

The Special Libraries Association named Roberta Shaffer its new executive director April 17. Shaffer, currently dean of the University of Texas Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences, will replace David Bender, retiring in June after 22 years with the association.

SLA President Donna Scheeder described Shaffer as “very passionate about the future of information professionals and the rapidly changing environment of the special library profession,” while Bender praised her “diverse mixture of knowledge and experience . . . that will facilitate success in everything she chooses to do.” Shaffer will begin her new job September 4, and will make her first appearance as executive director–designate at SLA’s annual conference in San Antonio, Texas, June 9–14.
