At least 15 maps and rare books are among the damaged and missing items discovered April 19 at the Bangor (Maine) Public Library. The theft and vandalism of such 19th century items as The Geography of the Heavens by Elijah Hinsdale Burritt, a topographical map of Lincoln County, and a volume of selected proofs from Century Magazine are thought to have occurred within the last three weeks, according to an April 20 Bangor Daily News report.
The crime was uncovered when a library staff worker in search of a rare book found that only its binding remained. Further investigation revealed other bindings and protective boxes had been stripped of their contents, with maps cut from books and plates removed. Police were notified following the thefts.
“They’ve taken something away from the city,” Library Director Barbara McDade said, adding that she was sorry that access to rare items would now have to be restricted.
