Tenafly Public Library Reopening
Delayed by Asbestos Cleanup
The Tenafly (N.J.) Public Library, currently undergoing a $600,000 renovation originally scheduled for completion September 5, will not reopen until mid-October at the earliest due to the unexpected presence of asbestos in the building’s floor tiles. The discovery was made the first week of September when construction workers removed the carpeting, according to the September 12 Bergen County Record.
Les Olszewsky of East Coast Haz Mat Removal, which has been contracted to remove the tiles, said there had never been any danger to library staff or patrons, as asbestos fibers could only have been released into the air from broken tiles. Nearly all the tiles were intact and covered by carpeting throughout the library.
Library Director Stephen Wechtler told the Record, “We ask that Tenafly residents be patient. Because it will be worth it and we will open as soon as we can.” The library has been closed to the public since July 17.
