Teen Melee, Gunshot Raise
Security Concerns in Savannah
Security concerns have arisen at the Chatham-Effingham- Liberty Regional Library in the wake of an altercation among teenagers at the main facility of the Savannah, Georgia–based system and a gunshot at another branch.
Police were called to the Bull Street facility in mid-August when rival groups of teens confronted one another in the second-floor adult section, the Savannah News reported August 28. The youths spilled onto the library’s front steps, where a crowd of some 50 quickly gathered. A fight then broke out nearby, and the teens didn’t leave until the police arrived.
An unidentified person fired a gun into the floor of the Forest City branch August 28. The August 30 News said the suspect was sitting at a computer when the gun went off; staff initially thought the noise was caused by a monitor exploding.
After the Bull Street branch was renovated, former system Director Lon Dickerson, who was fired August 15, hired a private security firm to replace the county police that used to provide library security. Interim Director Bill Johnson told the newspaper the library was reassessing its security measure in the wake of the recent incidents.
