Stark County Strikers Get 4% IncreasesStriking members of the Service Employees International Union voted August 26 to approve a three-year contract with the Stark County Library Board, ending a four-week walkout in Canton, Ohio. Employees reported back to work August 28 and the library resumed normal hours and services at the main library and nine branches. Under the new contract, workers will receive 4% increases, with a $500 signing bonus, plus $200 in the second and third years. Additionally, those with 25 years of service will get annual 5.5% raises, 5% for 20 years, and 4.5% for 15 years, according to the August 29 Canton Repository. The fair-share clause, which would require all bargaining unit members to pay assessment fees to support the union, did not get into the contract. Board President Jacqueline Bollas Caldwell called fair share “a critical issue to the board.” Union official Anne Hill told the newspaper, “This board is so ideologically conservative that we could have stayed out another four weeks and we wouldn’t have made progress on this issue.” A safe-workplace clause also was not included in the contract, but the board approved the creation of an ad hoc joint committee on the problem. Criminal trespassing charges have been dropped against 15 employees who were arrested August 16 for blocking the main library’s entrance, according to the August 29 Akron Beacon Journal.
