Elderly Couple Balances Library’s BooksHarley and Bonnie Mishler, aged 91 and 88 respectively, surprised Willamina, Oregon, city officials by presenting a blank check to pay off the overdue $58,000 mortgage on the building that will house a new library. “I had never even met them before, so I was stunned,” City Recorder Carol Haight told the Associated Press September 6. “I said, ‘Are you sure?’ I was so overwhelmed. This is such a boost for this project and for the city.” Library Director Melissa Hansen rushed over to city hall from the library when she heard the news; Councilwoman Rita Baller started crying. “This is so incredible,” said Hansen. “They are such dear people. This town has needed a bigger library for a long time.” The city had purchased the 56,000-square-foot building, borrowing $58,000 from a local businessman, but could not afford to pay it back when his note came due. The Mishlers, who have been married only three years, said they wanted to do something special for the community and decided on the library because it reaches out and benefits everyone.
