NYPL Launches Training Initiative
to Close the Digital Divide

New York Public Library has launched a major initiative to close the digital divide by educating people about technology and information resources. The Click On @ the Library campaign was launched October 21 with hands-on training sessions bringing together new media companies with patrons in 14 branches in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island.

That day NYPL also announced a $2.3-million grant from the Picower Foundation that will allow the library to retool 10 sites into public training centers to open next spring. The donation—the largest technology training grant NYPL has ever received from a private donor—will also provide 114 hours of public training each week on Internet research, office software, and Web page design.

“It is clear that computer and Web skills are increasingly essential elements of success in the new economy,” said library President Paul LeClerc. “Thanks to our corporate partners, efforts such as Click On @ the Library will help level the playing field.”
