NISO Tackles a New
Resource-Sharing Standard
The National Information Standards Organization announced October 4 it will begin work on a Z39.50 standard to improve search and retrieval across dissimilar online library catalogs. A standards committee, chaired by William E. Moen of the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Science, has been charged with producing a profile that will simplify the exchange of holdings information, a key component in statewide and regional resource sharing.
The NISO profile is to be compatible with the Bath Profile, a British specification that attained internationally registered profile status in June.
NISO will ballot the draft profile through its regular standards development procedures, resulting in a new Z39.50 standard. Approval of the committee’s work is expected by the summer of 2001.
