L.A. County Libraries Join StrikeUnion employees of the County of Los Angeles Public Library joined a countywide strike October 11 of Local 660 of the Service Employees International Union, following a one-day walkout last week. Nancy Mahr, public information officer for the library system, told American Libraries that 70% of the staff did not come to work. Only 15 libraries out of 78 were open, and only one bookmobile out of three was running. The strike was suspended at midnight by union leaders in response to an appeal from Cardinal Roger Mahoney of the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese. But they warned that they would call off the suspension if negotiations didn’t make progress. Mahr said that all employees returned to work October 12 and all 78 libraries were open. “It’s a normal day now,” she said, “but we are staying on alert because we don’t know if the strike is going on.” Posted October 16, 2000. |
