Former Greensboro Courier Accused of
Embezzling $41,000

A former Greensboro (N.C.) Public Library courier was arrested October 24 and charged with embezzling more than $41,000 from the library since 1998.

Reginald Lee, whose job had been to pick up cash from various branches and deposit it in the bank, had worked at the library for 10 years before being suspended in September. He resigned October 6.

The library first noticed some revenue from overdue and lost books was missing in the spring; the case was turned over to police in September after internal auditors suspected criminal wrongdoing might be involved, the Greensboro News and Record reported October 26.

Police said the missing money went undetected for years because of internal bookkeeping problems. Officer G. R. Knight added that the audit showed the actual amount missing to be $69,000, and those bookkeeping problems made some of that amount “not so easy to tack to Mr. Lee.”

Director Sandy Neerman said the library had taken steps to ensure such an incident could not happen again.
