Vandal Causes $4,000 in Damage
to Fairbanks Public Library

An unknown vandal broke into the Noel Wien Public Library in Fairbanks, Alaska, October 30, causing around $4,000 worth of damage. The intruder smashed a window to gain entry to the library and proceeded to tip over book shelves and push a computer terminal off a desk, the Fairbanks News-Miner reported November 1.

Following a break-in in 1998, the library installed an alarm system, which apparently failed during the latest episode of vandalism. Director Greg Hill told the News-Miner the library would be getting new alarms and motion detectors. He added that “We’re just grateful that the damage wasn’t more extensive. It’s interesting that people in the community feel every bit as angry and violated as we do.”
